Can a new born kitten live without his or her mother?

okay, so we had found kittens in our backyard, and the mom had ran away because i guess something had spooked her...She came back and took three of her kittens elsewhere. But left one. I want to know if we can take the kitten in and care for her ourselfs if she doesnt come for that little one
