What is the diference between a wave board and a skate board?

i want a new sk8 board. i just got a rip stick like ting for my birth day it was really cool but got hit by a van. my dad wants to get me another thing exactly like that, but i said i wanted a skate board instead. so he told me to do Research and find out which one is better, and i cant find any thing. help?
